Maldives president appoints special envoy to monitor investigation

MALE – Maldives President Ibrahim Solih has appointed British national Abbas Faiz as the government's special envoy to oversee the investigation of suspects linked to a terror attack on Parliament Speaker and former President Mohamed Nasheed, local media reported Thursday.

A presidential directive published on Wednesday has tasked Faiz with ensuring that national laws, as well as international best practices, are applied to the investigation, trial, and prosecution of suspects involved in using a remote-controlled improvised explosive device to target Nasheed on May 6.

Faiz is a former senior advisor to the Secretary General of Amnesty International and an expert in human rights in South Asia.

Nasheed was severely injured following an attack on May 6 and underwent several surgeries in the ADK Hospital in Male before being transferred to Germany for further treatment. He is currently recovering from his injuries.
