COVID-19 cases rise in New Delhi, India’s tally nears 13,000

MANILA / HANOI / YANGON / SEOUL / KUALA LUMPUR / WELLINGTON / NEW DELHI – Indian capital city Delhi once again witnessed a rise in the number of new COVID-19 cases per day, with over 1,000 daily new cases being registered over each of the past four days.

Meanwhile, the number of new COVID-19 cases registered per day in India continued to be near the 13,000-mark for the second consecutive day.

As many as 12,899 new COVID-19 cases were registered during the past 24 hours in the country, taking the total tally to 43,296,692, said the data released by the federal health ministry on Sunday.

Delhi has been one of the worst affected places in India over the past two years in terms of the highest number of COVID-19 cases and deaths.

According to official figures released on Saturday evening, Delhi registered a total of 1,534 new cases in 24 hours.

Presently, there are 72,474 active COVID-19 cases in the country with an increase of 4,366 active cases during the past 24 hours. 

Democratic People’s Republic of Korea

The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea has recorded another 19,310 new fever cases amid its first official COVID-19 outbreak, state news agency KCNA reported on Sunday.

Overall more than 4.6 million have shown fever symptoms since an outbreak was first acknowledged in mid-May.

Malaysia

Malaysia reported 2,127 new COVID-19 infections as of midnight Saturday, bringing the national total to 4,538,922, according to the health ministry.

There are no new imported cases, with all 2,127 cases being local transmissions, data released on the ministry's website showed.

One more death has been reported, bringing the death toll to 35,732.

Myanmar

Myanmar confirmed 11 new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, bringing the tally to 613,485, according to the Ministry of Health on Saturday.

The ministry said it has tested 5,894 people for COVID-19 in the past 24 hours, and the daily positivity rate was 0.19 percent.

The death toll from COVID-19 still stood at 19,434 on Saturday as no new deaths from COVID-19 were reported in the past 24 hours, it said.

New Zealand

New Zealand reported 3,235 community cases of COVID-19 and five more deaths on Sunday, said the Ministry of Health in a statement.

Of the cases, 991 were from the largest city Auckland.

In addition, there were 42 new cases of COVID-19 reported at the border on Sunday, according to the ministry.

Philippines

The Philippines on Saturday said it has surpassed its target of fully vaccinating over 70 million, or 77.78 percent of its target population with the COVID-19 shots.

As of Friday, the National Vaccination Operations Center reported that 70,005,247 Filipinos have received the two-dose vaccine, including more than 3.2 million children aged five to 11 and nearly 9.5 million minors aged 12 to 17.

Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire urged people on Saturday to get the booster shots to sustain their immunity amid a spike of COVID-19 cases in the country.

Vergeire said the country now tallies an average of 350 cases daily, 50 to 60 percent higher than the previous week. In Metro Manila, the daily average was 102 cases last week, but now it increased to around 170, she added.

"The number of cases is increasing, albeit slowly. We need to be cautious," she told a televised press conference, warning the cases could reach 800 to 1,200 per day by the end of June if the current number of cases continues to increase.

The Philippines has nearly 3.7 million confirmed COVID-19 cases, including 60,467 deaths. The country reported the highest single-day tally on Jan. 15 this year, with 39,004 new cases.

Vietnam

Vietnam recorded 699 new COVID-19 cases on Saturday, down by 23 from Friday, according to its Ministry of Health.

All the new infections were domestically transmitted. The Vietnamese capital Hanoi was the pandemic hotspot with 141 new cases recorded, followed by the northern Phu Tho province with 48 and the southern Ho Chi Minh City with 39.

The newly registered infections brought the total tally to 10,737,107 with 43,083 deaths. Nationwide, 9,597,375 COVID-19 patients, or over 89 percent of the total infections, have recovered.

Nearly 225.3 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been administered in the Southeast Asian country, including roughly 202 million shots on people aged 18 and above, according to the ministry.
