COVID-19: DPRK sees 40,060 more with fever symptoms

SEOUL / HANOI / YANGON / NEW DELHI / ISLAMABAD / KUALA LUMPUR – The Democratic People's Republic of Korea on Sunday reported 40,060 new people showing fever symptoms and one death amid the isolated nation's first confirmed COVID-19 outbreak, state media KCNA said.

India

India's COVID-19 tally rose to 43,222,017 on Sunday, as 8,582 new cases were registered during the past 24 hours across the country, showed the federal health ministry's latest data.

Besides, four deaths from the pandemic were registered across the country since Saturday morning, taking the total death toll to 524,757.

The number of new cases recorded every 24 hours has been rising in India over the past few days, leading to stricter COVID-19 guidelines announced by several authorities. However, possibilities of another COVID-19 wave have been ruled out by the concerned health authorities.

Presently, there are still 44,513 active COVID-19 cases in the country with an increase of 4,143 active cases during the past 24 hours.

Malaysia

Malaysia reported 1,709 new COVID-19 infections as of midnight Saturday, bringing the national total to 4,524,727, according to the health ministry.

There are three new imported cases, with 1,706 being local transmissions, data released on the ministry's website showed.

Two more deaths have been reported, bringing the death toll to 35,711.

There are 22,712 active cases, with 24 being held in intensive care and 14 of those in need of assisted breathing.

Myanmar

In a government-run school in the east-central part of Myanmar's former capital Yangon on Friday morning, 7-year-old Htet Nyar Khant, along with his friends, waited to receive his first dose of COVID-19 vaccine.

Despite some of his friends saying they were afraid of needles, Htet Nyar told Xinhua he was brave and ready to get vaccinated. The vaccination was to fight COVID-19, he added.

In the morning, most primary school students wearing white and green uniforms waited in the classrooms or in line outside the vaccination room for inoculation. Teachers and health workers arranged and helped them receive the COVID-19 vaccines.

According to the health ministry, Myanmar has some 3.62 million school children aged 5 to 12, and they were currently being inoculated with China's Sinopharm vaccine.

About 1 million children aged 5 to 15, who are not attending school, in the country will also be vaccinated against COVID-19, the health ministry said.

Myanmar, home to more than 55.6 million people, has been vaccinating children aged 5 to 12 since June 2.

By Friday, more than 2.2 million school children aged 5 to 12 have been inoculated with Sinopharm, the Chinese-made vaccine currently used for the age group, according to the health ministry.

Myanmar confirmed 13 new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, bringing its total tally to 613,440, according to the country's Ministry of Health on Saturday.

The death toll from COVID-19 in the country still stood at 19,434 on Saturday, it said.

Pakistan

Pakistan reported 67 new COVID-19 cases during the last 24 hours, taking the total tally to 1,531,179, the Ministry of Health said on Sunday.

A total of 30,381 people have died from COVID-19 in Pakistan, with no more deaths recorded on Saturday, according to the ministry's statistics.

Currently, 47 active cases were in critical condition in the country.

Vietnam

Vietnam recorded 710 new COVID-19 cases on Saturday, down by 251 from Friday, according to its Ministry of Health.

All the new infections were domestically transmitted in 39 provinces and cities.

The Vietnamese capital Hanoi was the pandemic hotspot with 176 new cases recorded on Saturday, followed by the northern Yen Bai province with 60 and the central Nghe An province with 53.

The infections brought the total tally to 10,731,244 with 43,083 deaths.

More than 223.4 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been administered in the country, including about 200.7 million shots on people aged 18 and above, said the ministry.
