New constitution enters into force in Uzbekistan

TASHKENT – Uzbekistan's new constitution entered into force on Monday in line with a decision of the Uzbek Central Election Commission.

The new constitution defines Uzbekistan as a state that is sovereign, democratic, and upholds the rule of law, said Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, adding that the new constitution will become the cornerstone of the country's reform.

Uzbekistan held a referendum on Sunday, which approved amendments to the country's constitution.

Based on data released by the Uzbek Central Election Commission, 90.2 percent of more than 16 million voters supported the changes to the constitution.
