Over 50 million COVID-19 shots administered in Myanmar

YANGON / SINGAPORE / BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN / HANOI / WELLINGTON / SEOUL / NEW DELHI / ULAN BATOR / SUVA / ISLAMABAD – The number of COVID-19 vaccine doses administered in Myanmar has exceeded 50 million by Saturday, the Ministry of Health's figures showed on Sunday.

The ministry reported 66 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday, bringing the tally in the country to 611,875.

A daily positivity rate of 0.57 percent was recorded after 11,512 lab samples have been tested in the past 24 hours, the ministry said.

The death toll of the disease in the country has increased to 19,433 after one more death from COVID-19 was reported on Sunday.

Brunei

Brunei reported 544 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday, bringing the national tally to 135,974.

As a country of 420,000 people, Brunei has recorded less than 1,000 new cases for 11 straight days since March 24 since the daily increase during the third wave of the pandemic reached its peak on March 3 with 4,885 cases.

As of April 2, 61.9 percent of Brunei's population have received three doses of COVID-19 vaccines.

The Health Ministry said that on the first day of COVID-19 vaccination for children aged 5 to 11 years old that started on Saturday, a total of 981 children or 2.3 percent of children aged 5 to 11 years old in the country have received the first doses of COVID-19 vaccines.

India

India's COVID-19 tally rose to 43,029,044 on Monday, as 913 new cases were registered during the past 24 hours across the country, showed the health ministry's latest data.

Besides, as many as 13 deaths due to the pandemic since Sunday morning took the total death toll to 521,358.

Mongolia

The number of active COVID-19 cases in Mongolia has dropped below 1,000 for the first time since Dec. 22, 2020, the country's health ministry reported on Monday.

The number of active cases in the Asian country stood at 971 after 81 new local infections were reported in the past day, the ministry said in a statement.

Meanwhile, no new related deaths were reported in the past day, and the death toll from COVID-19 has remained unchanged at 2,108 in the country.

New Zealand

New Zealand recorded 10,205 new community cases of COVID-19 on Monday, the Ministry of Health said in a statement.

Of the new community infections, 1,835 were detected in the largest city Auckland, and the rest were identified across the country, according to the ministry.

Pakistan

Pakistan on Sunday reported 154 new COVID-19 cases and no death was recorded during the day, the country's ministry of health said on Monday.

According to the data released by the ministry, the country's overall tally of COVID-19 cases has risen to 1,525,620, including 1,486,191 recoveries.

Singapore

Singapore reported 3,743 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 on Sunday, bringing the total tally to 1,109,744, official data showed.

Of the new cases, 3,674 were local transmissions and 69 were imported cases.

A total of 507 cases are currently warded in hospitals, with 21 cases in intensive care units.

South Korea

South Korea reported 127,190 new COVID-19 cases as of midnight Sunday compared to 24 hours ago, taking the total number of infections to 14,001,406, the health authorities said Monday.

The daily caseload was down from 234,301 in the previous day due to fewer virus tests over the weekend, marking the lowest in 41 days sine Feb. 22, according to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA).

Tonga and Samoa

More COVID-19 cases have been reported in Tonga and Samoa in recent days.

Tonga's Minister for Health Saia Piukala said on Monday that from last Thursday to Sunday, Tonga reported 688 new COVID-19 cases, Tonga's news website Matangi Tonga Online reported.

Tonga has so far reported a total of 7,234 COVID-19 cases with 2,303 active cases and nine deaths.

Currently, 90 percent of the target population in Tonga have received their second doses while 98 percent have received their first doses. 49 percent of the target population have received their booster shots.

Meanwhile, in another South Pacific island nation of Samoa, the COVID-19 cases continue to rise with 164 new cases recorded over the past day.

The Ministry of Health confirmed that the total number of COVID-19 cases in Samoa is 2,443, of which, 1,514 are active cases, according to the newspaper Samoa Observer on Monday.

Currently, Samoa has recorded two COVID-19 related deaths with the first death reported on March 30.

Vietnam

Vietnam recorded 50,730 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday, a decline of 14,889 cases from Saturday, said the Ministry of Health.

The new infections, logged in 61 localities nationwide, were all domestically transmitted.

The Vietnamese capital Hanoi remained the epidemic hotspot with 6,304 new cases on Sunday, followed by the northern Yen Bai province with 2,604 and the central Nghe An province with 2,599.
