South Korea reports 55,365 new COVID-19 cases

YANGON / SINGAPORE / MANILA / HANOI / SEOUL / KUALA LUMPUR / NEW DELHI / ISLAMABAD – South Korea recorded 55,365 more COVID-19 cases as of midnight Wednesday compared to 24 hours ago, taking the total number of infections to 26,037,020, the health authorities said Thursday.

The daily caseload was down from 62,472 in the previous day, but it was higher than 46,887 tallied a week earlier, according to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA).

For the past week, the daily average number of new cases was 45,686.

Among the newly reported infections, 50 were imported cases, lifting the total to 70,271.

The number of infected people who were in critical condition stood at 323, down 13 from the previous day.

Fifty-two more deaths were confirmed from the pandemic, bringing the death toll to 29,531. 

India

India recorded 1,016 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the total tally to 44,663,968, showed data released by the federal health ministry on Thursday.

With the reporting of fresh cases, India's active caseload currently stands at 13,187.

The country also logged three more COVID-19 related deaths, taking the overall death toll to 530,514 since the beginning of the pandemic, the ministry said.

According to the ministry, 44,120,267 COVID-19 patients have been cured and discharged from hospitals in the South Asian country, including 1,385 new recoveries.

Malaysia

Malaysia reported 3,267 new COVID-19 infections as of midnight Wednesday, bringing the total tally to 4,937,020, according to the health ministry.

Among them were two new imported cases and 3,265 local transmissions, data released on the ministry's website showed on Thursday.

Another 10 new deaths have been reported from the pandemic, taking the death toll to 36,514.

The ministry reported 4,026 new recoveries, bringing the total number of COVID-19 patients cured and discharged to 4,865,677 in the Southeast Asian country.

Currently, there are 34,829 active cases recorded in Malaysia, with 91 of them held in intensive care and 63 in need of assisted breathing.

The country reported 3,573 doses of COVID-19 vaccines were administered on Wednesday and that 86.1 percent of the population have received at least one dose, 84.3 percent are fully vaccinated with two doses, 49.8 percent have received the first booster dose and 1.6 percent have received the second booster dose.

Myanmar

Myanmar has vaccinated more than 37 million people for COVID-19 as of Tuesday, the Ministry of Health said on Wednesday.

The figures comprised over 30.72 million people aged 18 and above and more than 6.7 million people aged under 18 years old, the ministry said.

The ministry confirmed 70 new cases of COVID-19 in the past 24 hours, bringing the tally to 632,461.

It said that the health authorities tested 9,943 people for COVID-19 in the past 24 hours, and the daily positivity rate was 0.7 percent.

The death toll from COVID-19 in the country remained unchanged at 19,486 as no new deaths were reported in the past 24 hours, the ministry said.

The total number of patients who have recovered from COVID-19 in the country reached 606,724, including 103 new recoveries.

The Southeast Asian country detected its first COVID-19 cases in March 2020.

Pakistan

Pakistan has recorded 38 new COVID-19 cases, the country's ministry of health said on Thursday.

The overall tally of infected people climbed to 1,574,508 across the South Asian country with the fresh cases. A total of 30,629 people died of COVID-19 in Pakistan, with one more death reported on Wednesday, according to the ministry's statistics.

On Wednesday, 5,362 tests were conducted throughout Pakistan whereas the positivity rate stood at 0.71 percent.

There are 51 patients in critical condition in the country.  

Singapore

Singapore reported 2,982 new cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday, bringing the total tally to 2,131,554.

A total of 315 cases are currently warded in hospitals, with 14 of them in intensive care units, according to statistics released by the country's Ministry of Health.

Two new deaths from COVID-19 were reported on Wednesday, taking the total death toll to 1,693.

Philippines

The Philippines reported 1,241 new COVID-19 infections on Wednesday, pushing the number of confirmed cases in the Southeast Asian country to 4,012,868.

The Department of Health (DOH) said the number of active cases fell to 15,989, while 24 more patients died from COVID-19 complications, bringing the country's death toll to 64,322.

Metro Manila, the capital region with over 13 million people, tallied 310 new cases.

The Philippines reported its highest COVID-19 single-day tally of 39,004 new cases on Jan 15. The country, with a population of around 110 million, has fully vaccinated over 73.5 million people.

Vietnam

Vietnam recorded 468 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, up by 26 from Tuesday, according to its ministry of health.

The newly reported infections brought the total tally to 11,507,124. The Southeast Asian country reported no new deaths from the pandemic on Wednesday, with the total fatalities staying at 43,166.

As of Wednesday, there were 66 severe cases in need of assisted breathing in the country, according to the ministry.

Nationwide, 10,605,315 COVID-19 patients, or over 92 percent of the total infections, have recovered.

Over 262.4 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been administered in the country, including nearly 222.1 million shots to people aged 18 and above, said the ministry.

Vietnam has already recorded COVID-19 infections with the Omicron BA.4, BA.5, BA.2.12.1 and BA.2.74 sub-variants and is accelerating the inoculation of its people with a fourth vaccine dose.
