South Korea reports 66,587 new COVID-19 cases

SEOUL / TOKYO / MANILA / YANGON / SINGAPORE / KUALA LUMPUR / NEW DELHI / ISLAMABAD – South Korea reported 66,587 new COVID-19 cases as of midnight Tuesday compared to 24 hours ago, raising the total number of infections to 26,357,464, the health authorities said on Wednesday.

The daily caseload was down from 72,883 in the previous day, but it was higher than 62,468 tallied a week earlier, according to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA).

For the past week, the daily average number of new cases was 53,700.

Among the new cases, 67 were imported from overseas, lifting the total to 70,601.

The number of infected people who were in critical condition stood at 411, down one from the previous day.

Forty-seven more deaths were confirmed, leaving the death toll at 29,795.

Japan

New daily COVID-19 infections in Japan will exceed 100,000 on Tuesday for first time in two months, Fuji Television reported.

This came after the government scrapped COVID-19 border controls and introduced a domestic travel subsidy program in a bid to spur inbound and local tourism last month, Kyodo News reported.

Cases have been on the rise in recent weeks in what some authorities have called the eighth wave in the course of the pandemic. New daily infections in Japan have not reached 100,000 since Sept 14, according to health ministry data.

Tokyo reported 11,196 cases, surpassing the 10,000 threshold for the first time in two months, while Hokkaido, the northernmost main island and a popular tourist destination, reported a record 10,906 cases.

Malaysia

Malaysia reported 2,852 new COVID-19 infections as of midnight Tuesday, bringing the national total to 4,953,418, according to the health ministry.

There are three new imported cases, with 2,849 cases being local transmissions, data released on the ministry's website showed.

Another 12 new deaths have been reported, pushing the death toll to 36,566.

Myanmar

Myanmar confirmed 94 new cases of COVID-19 in the past 24 hours, bringing the total tally to 632,805, according to the Ministry of Health on Tuesday.

The ministry said in a statement that health authorities tested 8,329 people for COVID-19 in the past 24 hours, and the daily positivity rate was 1.13 percent.

The death toll from COVID-19 in the country remained unchanged at 19,486 on Tuesday as no new deaths were reported in the past 24 hours, the ministry said.

Philippines

The Philippines reported 1,071 new COVID-19 infections on Tuesday, pushing the number of confirmed cases in the Southeast Asian country to 4,020,240.

The Department of Health (DOH) said the number of active cases rose to 19,940, while 15 more patients died from COVID-19 complications, taking the country's death toll to 64,420.

Metro Manila, the capital region with over 13 million people, tallied 216 new cases.

India

India's daily COVID-19 caseload Wednesday increased to 501, officials said.

According to federal health ministry data released on Wednesday morning, 501 new cases of COVID-19 were reported.

According to data released by the government, the active caseload stands at 7,561.

The country also logged two more COVID-19-related deaths, taking the overall death toll to 530,535 since the beginning of the pandemic, the ministry said.

According to the ministry, 44,128,580 people have been cured and discharged from hospitals in the South Asian country.

Singapore

Singapore reported 3,111 new cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday, bringing the total tally to 2,144,522.

A total of 240 cases are currently warded in hospitals, with 15 of them in intensive care units, according to statistics released by the Ministry of Health.

No new deaths from COVID-19 were reported on Tuesday, leaving the death toll unchanged at 1,697.

Pakistan

Pakistan reported 32 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, the country's ministry of health said on Wednesday.

The overall tally of infected people increased to 1,574,744 after adding the new cases, according to the data released by the ministry.

A total of 30,629 people had died of COVID-19 in Pakistan, with no new deaths reported in the country during the last 24 hours, according to the ministry.

On Tuesday, 8,133 tests for COVID-19 were conducted throughout Pakistan, and the latest positivity rate stood at 0.39 percent.

Currently, 46 COVID-19 patients are in critical condition in the South Asian country.
