Virus: Philippines logs 2,321 new cases, death toll tops 62,000

MANILA / SINGAPORE / YANGON / WELLINGTON / KUALA LUMPUR – The Philippines reported 2,321 new COVID-19 infections on Sunday, bringing the number of confirmed cases in the Southeast Asian country to 3,891,418.

The Department of Health said the number of active cases rose to 24,067, while 49 more patients died from COVID-19 complications, pushing the country's death toll to 62,011.

Metro Manila, the capital region with over 13 million people, tallied 813 new cases.

The Philippines reported its highest COVID-19 single-day tally of 39,004 new cases on Jan. 15. The country, with a population of around 110 million, has fully vaccinated over 72.6 million people.

Malaysia

Malaysia reported 1,904 new COVID-19 infections as of midnight Sunday, bringing the national total to 4,791,456, according to the health ministry.

There was one new imported case, with 1,903 cases being local transmissions, data released on the ministry's website showed.

Another two deaths were reported, pushing the death toll to 36,245.

The ministry reported 3,138 new recoveries, bringing the total number of cured and discharged to 4,726,250.

Myanmar

Myanmar confirmed 70 new cases of COVID-19 in the past 24 hours, bringing the total tally to 615,559, according to the Ministry of Health on Sunday.

The ministry said in a statement that these cases included two infected people who returned from abroad.

The statement said that health authorities tested 6,464 people for COVID-19 in the past 24 hours, and the daily positivity rate was 1.08 percent.

The death toll from COVID-19 in the country rose to 19,440 as one new death was reported in the past 24 hours, the ministry said.

The total number of patients who have recovered from COVID-19 in the country rose to 593,794, including 49 new recoveries on Sunday.

The Southeast Asian country detected its first COVID-19 cases in March 2020. 

New Zealand

New Zealand recorded 1,296 new community cases of COVID-19 and four more deaths from the pandemic, the ministry of health said on Monday.

The country has seen the number of daily cases going down steadily from over 10,000 cases nationwide in early July.

Singapore

Singapore reported 1,309 new cases of COVID-19 on Sunday, bringing the total tally to 1,846,094.

Of the new cases, 158 cases were detected through PCR (polymerase chain reaction) tests and 1,151 through ART (antigen rapid test) tests, according to statistics released by the Ministry of Health.

Among the PCR cases, 147 were local transmissions and 11 were imported cases. Among the ART cases with mild symptoms and assessed to be of low risk, there were 1,089 local transmissions and 62 imported cases.

A total of 227 cases are currently warded in hospitals, with 10 cases held in intensive care units.
