Haughey wins bronze in 400m to add to her two golds

Hong Kong swimming star Siobhan Haughey continued her sensational run at the short-course World Championships in Abu Dhabi on Sunday with a solid third-place finish in the 400 metres freestyle.

Coming off a world-record setting performance in the 200m final on Thursday and a second gold in the 100-metres event on Saturday, Haughey kept it close for the first few lengths in the 400m event before China’s Li Bingjie gradually stretched out her lead.

Haughey turned on the afterburners on the final stretch, edging just ahead of Canada’s Summer McIntosh at one point, but ended up finishing a strong third behind Li and McIntosh with a time of 3:58.12.

The double Olympic-medallist is Hong Kong’s most decorated swimmer, and the only local athlete who has ever held a world record in swimming.
