HK fencer Vivian Kong claims bronze in National Games

Hong Kong’s epee fencer Vivian Kong clinched bronze at the National Games, after narrowing defeating reigning Olympic champion Sun Yiwen 15-14 in the women’s individual event on Tuesday.

The 27-year-old piled pressure on Sun throughout the match, before securing Hong Kong’s sixth medal at the games.

In a statement, home affairs secretary Caspar Tsui, congratulated the star fencer.

“She demonstrated superb skills in the competitions and achieved excellent results which deserve commendation. I am proud of her performance,” he said.

Kong will also take part in the women’s team epee event on Wednesday alongside teammates Coco Lin, Moonie Chu and Debbie Ho.

Meanwhile, SAR sports climber Shoji Chan’s medal hope was dashed after coming in fourth in the combined bouldering and lead climbing event.

The 21-year-old said even though he was disappointed with the outcome, he’d continue to strive high in future competitions.
