HK’s Cheung Ka-long wins fencing World Cup gold

Hong Kong’s top male fencer Cheung Ka-long has made history again after claiming gold for the men’s individual foil at the FIE World Cup in Paris.

The Tokyo Olympic fencing champion beat Edoardo Luperi of Italy 15-12 in the final in what was his first international outing since the Summer Games.

The 24-year-old will compete for another medal alongside his men’s foil teammates later on Sunday.

Chief Executive Carrie Lam congratulated Cheung, saying he’s made Hong Kong very proud.

Writing on her Facebook page, she said SAR athletes have continued to perform remarkably after the Tokyo Olympics, adding that her government will continue to support the professional development of local athletes.

“I hope the next term of administration will accept our recommendation to restructure the government and set up a new Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau to push forward the relevant work,” she wrote.

Separately, the Home Affairs Bureau also congratulated Cheung, and called on people to continue supporting the Hong Kong fencing team as well as other local athletes.
