Two badminton medals for HK, but gold proves elusive

Hong Kong’s badminton players claimed two medals on the final day of the Tokyo Paralympics on Sunday.

Chu Man-kai secured a silver medal in men’s singles SH6 event, after losing a tightly contested final to India’s Krishna Nagar. He lost the first game 21-17 before levelling the contest with a 21-16 win the second. The third set went the way of his rival, 21-17.

“The air current was exceptionally strong today and had an impact on my performance because it was hard to control the shuttlecock,” he told reporters after what he said was a tough match.

“It wasn’t easy getting this silver medal. I am very grateful for being able take part in the Paralympics, and having the chance take things one step at a time to finally play in the final.

“I’d like to thank my coach, family members and friends for their support… I’d also like to thank the people of Hong Kong. Thank you for supporting and encouraging me all the way.”

Earlier in the day, Hong Kong’s Daniel Chan also took home a bronze medal in the men’s WH2 wheelchair badminton event, after beating South Korea’s Kim Kyung-hoon 2-0.

Chief Executive Carrie Lam congratulated both Chu and Chan for their strong performances.

“It is the first time that badminton has become an official sport at this Games. With the medals, Chu Man-kai and Chan Ho-yuen have made history in Hong Kong sports, making Hong Kong people proud,” Lam said in a statement.

In all, Hong Kong paralympians secured two silver and three bronze medals in the Tokyo Games. The closing ceremony takes place on Sunday evening.
