Thailand’s king, queen test positive for COVID-19

BANGKOK / KUALA LUMPUR / SINGAPORE / MANILA – Thailand's King Maha Vajiralongkorn Phra Vajiraklaochaoyuhua and Queen Suthida Bajrasudhabimalalakshana tested positive for COVID-19 Friday evening, the Bureau of the Royal Household announced on Saturday.

The king and queen were experiencing mild symptoms from the infection, and they are in relatively good health. Doctors advise them to refrain from royal duties for a period of time, according to a statement issued by the Bureau of the Royal Household.

Thailand reported 3,961 new hospitalized COVID-19 infections during Dec 4-10, bringing the total number of infections to more than 4.7 million since the outbreak of the pandemic, according to the latest weekly report issued by the Ministry of Public Health.

A further 107 deaths were reported during the period, bringing the country's COVID-19 death toll to 33,392.  

Malaysia 

Malaysia reported 1,138 new COVID-19 infections as of midnight Friday, bringing the national total to 5,016,023, according to the health ministry.

There are two new imported cases and 1,136 cases of local transmissions, data released on the ministry's website showed.

Another eight deaths have been reported, pushing the death toll to 36,795.

The ministry reported 1,420 new recoveries, bringing the total number of cured and discharged to 4,962,707.

There are 16,521 active cases, with 56 being held in intensive care and 37 of those in need of assisted breathing.

The country reported 2,730 vaccine doses administered on Friday alone and 86.1 percent of the population have received at least one dose, 84.3 percent are fully vaccinated and 49.8 percent have received the first booster and 1.9 percent have received the second booster.

Singapore

Singapore reported 1,245 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday, bringing the total tally to 2,187,459.

A total of 101 cases are currently warded in hospitals, with five of them held in intensive care units, according to statistics released by the Ministry of Health.

No new deaths from COVID-19 were reported on Friday, leaving the total death toll unchanged at 1,709.

Philippines

The Philippines reported 1,306 new COVID-19 infections on Friday, pushing the number of confirmed cases in the Southeast Asian country to 4,054,159.

The Department of Health (DOH) said the number of active cases rose to 18,910, while 27 more patients died from COVID-19 complications, pushing the country's death toll to 64,995.

Metro Manila, the capital region with over 13 million people, tallied 513 new cases.

The Philippines reported its highest COVID-19 single-day tally of 39,004 new cases on Jan 15. The country, with a population of around 110 million, has fully vaccinated over 73.8 million people.
