Hong Kong Games cancelled due to Covid-19 situation

The eighth edition of the Hong Kong Games has been cancelled due to Covid-19, the Leisure and Culture Services Department (LCSD) announced on Friday.

The biennial multi-sport games had already been postponed from 2020-21 to 2021-22 because of the ongoing pandemic situation in the city.

Most of the LCSD’s recreation and sports facilities have been closed since January this year, in alignment with the government’s tightened social distancing measures.

As a result, the government said district athlete selection competitions have not been completed, knocking the event off-schedule.

Many of the LCSD’s facilities also continue to be used for anti-pandemic purposes.

The organising committee of the games said the decision to cancel had been taken to avoid people gathering and therefore decrease the risk of spreading Covid-19 in the community.
